After completing the first phase of his summer residence, a vast estate in Chengde, Manchuria, that he named “Mountain Hamlet to Escape the Summer Heat" (Bishu shanzhuang), the Kangxi emperor (1654 – 1722) published a book of his poems along with illustrations by artists that showed how he viewed the thirty-six scenes in his new gardens.
