The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is designated to encourage promising students from foreign countries to pursue their degree studies in Taiwan and to enhance educational and academic exchange. For those students interested in studying in Taiwan, they may choose to pursue their degree with English as the primary language of instruction or in Chinese. There are some popular degree programs in Taiwan. Such programs include but are not limited to the following:
- Global MBA at National Taiwan University (NTU)
- International Studies (IMPIS) at Chengchi University (NCCU)
- Int’l Health Program at Yang-Ming University
- Int’l Ph.D. Program of Green Energy at Chiao Tung University (NCTU)
- Information Systems and Applications at Tsing Hua University (NTHU)
- Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU)
To encourage international students and individuals to undertake Mandarin Chinese language study in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education established the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) Program, providing an excellent opportunity for international students to enhance their language skills and to gain cultural experiences by being immersed in a Chinese-speaking environment. Recipients will be granted scholarships award periods of 12, 9, 6, 3 months - dates/information to be released soon.
The HES scholarship will provide a monthly allowance of NT$25,00 (approximately USD$830, subject to exchange rate). This amount should be used to cover the entire cost of tuition, as well as accommodation, board, insurance, and miscellaneous fees. No other additional subsidy will be given.
To be eligible for the HES, applicants must be a US citizen and currently studying in UCLA. Required Application Documents:
- One copy of completed Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Application Form (2025-26) - updated application form link coming soon.
- One copy of completed HES Terms of Agreement Form - updated link coming soon.
- One photocopy of US passport or other certificate of nationality.
- One photocopy of the highest-level diploma received and a complete transcript.
- Photocopy of completed application forms for the language centers applied to in Taiwan, or other documents which can prove applicant’s admission status. For summer 2-month program applicants, an admission acceptance letter from a language center should be enclosed in the application material package.
- Two recommendation letters.
- Optional: One photocopy of the TOCFL certificate. Participants of the TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) held by the Education Division, TECO office, will also be considered with priority.
