A tradition at the NHLRC, the Annual Heritage Language Research Institutes bring together researchers from language sciences and education to focus on fostering new research in heritage language and to promote the heritage language agenda in academia and society at large.

Teacher Workshop

June 28 - July 2, 2015 at UCLA

This workshop is designed to address issues at the heart of heritage language teaching, including the differences between teaching L2 and HL learners, differentiated instruction, learner strategies, assessment, and more. Workshop participants will create and present a final group project for their language.

Ninth International Conference on Language Teacher Education

May 14-16, 2015 at The Commons Hotel in Minneapolis, MN

The Ninth International Conference on Language Teacher Education welcomes proposals for papers and symposia on all aspects of the education and professional development of language teachers. Papers and symposia may report on data-based research, theoretical and conceptual analyses, or best practices in language teacher education.

A lifetime of achievement

UCLA Professor Olga Kagan, National Heritage Language Resource Center director, received a lifetime achievement award at the 130th annual Modern Language Association (MLA) convention in January 2015.


In Memoriam: Joshua Fishman, 1926-2015

In recognition of Dr. Fishman’s foundational work in the field of heritage language studies, NHLRC established the Joshua Fishman Award for Outstanding Contributions and Leadership in the Heritage Language Field in 2010.
