Legendary Taiwanese opera performer Liao Chiung-chih will be demonstrating and discussing Taiwanese opera poses and vocals, as well as performances of “The Butterfly Lovers.” In addition to her fame as an opera performer, Ms. Liao is also the recipient of the National Cultural Award of the Republic of China (Taiwan)—the highest award given to those who have made outstanding contributions in arts and culture.
The Butterfly Lovers, also known as Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai (梁山伯與祝英台), is revered as one of the most famous legends in Chinese folklore. Its status has gained recognition as the “Asian Romeo and Juliet.” The story involves Zhu Yingtai, who disguises herself as a man in order to attend school. She becomes good friends and sworn brothers with Liang Shanbo, a fellow traveler and schoolmate. Despite their friendship, Liang remains unaware of Zhu’s secret.
