Dr. Karin Nielsen is professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine.  A native of Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Nielsen completed her medical degree at the Universidade of Rio de Janeiro followed by a pediatric residency at the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado also in Rio.  At UCLA she completed a five-year clinical research and virology fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases, obtained a Master degree in Public Health and Epidemiology, and in 1996 joined the Department of Pediatrics as a faculty member.  Dr. Nielsen is an expert in HIV medicine, pediatrics and global health.  For more than two decades she has collaborated with Brazilian institutions, and she formed a consortium of Brazilian institutions in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Ribeirao Preto focusing on large-scale NIH-funded studies of HIV treatment and prevention.  Dr. Nielsen also has an active research collaboration in Mozambique through the Community of Sant’Egidio DREAM NGO initiative.  In partnership with the UCLA Schools of Engineering and Public Health, Dr. Nielsen’s research has been funded by the NIH Fogarty Institute for collaborative research in innovative medical technology for surveillance of infectious diseases and she has trained a large number of young investigators from Brazil and the U.S.  Her collaborative research has changed HIV standards of care worldwide.
