  • Restoration of Hagioi Theodoroi
    Research|
    Dr. Gerstel is currently spearheading the restoration of the church of Hagioi Theodoroi in Vamvaka, Mani. Her work on this project has been published in the Journal of Modern Greek Studies and has been recognized in the short documentary Blessings and Vows.

  • Vamvakou Summer Program
    Research|
    Professors Sharon Gerstel (UCLA) and Dimitris Krallis (Simon Fraser University) led a team of doctoral students and staff on an art historical, archaeological, and broadly historical tour of Laconia, with the village of Vamvakou as their base. The second phase of the program will be held in Summer 2023.

  • Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture
    Research|
    The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center builds on UCLA’s strengths across many academic fields, placing Hellenic culture within a broad historical and contemporary context. The Center supports a comprehensive set of academic and public initiatives, both locally, through strategic collaborations with organizations in Southern California, and in Greece and Cyprus.

    The Hellenic Heritage Imaging Center (HHIC) is a framework for collaborative research on the application of technologies, especially digital imaging technologies, to the written and material heritage of Greece and other Mediterranean peoples and cultures.

  • Patrick Leigh Fermor House-Benaki Museum
    Research|
    The UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture has a longstanding relationship with the Benaki Museum, which includes collaboration on lecture series and exhibitions in the Center’s office space.

  • Soundscapes of Byzantium
    Research|
    Soundscapes of Byzantium is an international collaborative effort that seeks to investigate Byzantine liturgical spaces through the scientific analysis of acoustics in conjunction with the study of changing architectural forms, the documentation of imagery inspired by choral performance and hymn composition, and the transcription and recording of medieval chant.

  • Gefyra (Bridge): UCLA-SFU’s Pilot Program
    Research| Education|
    Gefyra is a three-year pilot program involving the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies at Simon Fraser University. The primary aim of this program is to bridge the geographical gap between the Greek academic community and the West Coast.

Projects/Programs

  • The projects and programs on this map constitute our “global data.” We define global data to be information related to “global topics” such as events, activities, and geographical areas outside of the United States. Any project or program conducted in an area outside of the United States is included on the map, as it speaks to UCLA’s direct engagement with the global community. Even if a project or program is conducted domestically, it is included as long as it engages with one or more global topics.

  • To collect data for the Projects/Programs map, we survey faculty on their research pursuits. We also explore UCLA websites such as faculty profiles, research centers, and department pages to learn about past and ongoing projects. We periodically review our data, archiving and removing projects and programs that have concluded or expired.
