What sort of opportunities has working abroad presented you with?
Working abroad has offered me transformative opportunities for both personal and professional growth. After earning my BSc in Biology from UCLA in 1983, I moved to Greece and completed my PhD in Biology at the NKUA. My academic career began in 1992 at Deree- ACG. I played a pivotal role through leadership roles in transforming the Science and Mathematics Department from a service department for the Liberal education (LE) program to one with its own science and math programs and minors.
Can you speak a little bit about your career and how it has progressed since graduating from UCLA?
My career reflects UCLA's principles of excellence, innovation, and collaboration. After my PhD at NKUA, I started working as a Biology Professor at Deree-ACG. I also contributed to the developement of academic programs, upgraded labs, and fostered international collaborations. Leadership roles, including Department Head and Biomedical Sciences Director, embody values instilled by UCLA. Guided by the motto “Once a Bruin, always a Bruin,” I remain committed to advancing STEM education.
How do you think UCLA prepares students to fill positions that have a global reach and influence?
UCLA equips students for global impact through active learning, interdisciplinary studies, and soft skill development. Its robust Academic and LE programs broadened my perspective, fostering critical thinking and adaptability. Beyond academics, UCLA provided extracurricular activities and teamwork skills that shaped my career. These values, combined with my PhD training at NKUA, have enabled me to lead science education initiatives bridging American and international standards at Deree-ACG.
Are you involved in any international UCLA alumni groups or support networks?
I engage with UCLA alumni through initiatives like UCLA ONE, mentoring students and attending events like the 2019 Athens gathering of the Anderson School of Management. I visited UCLA in 2024 and attended the EEB Research Celebration, reinforcing ties to my alma mater. A UCLA study abroad student currently attends my Neurobiology course exemplifying successful collaborations. Looking ahead, I aim to expand our partnerships strengthening exchange programs and fostering closer collaboration.
