Is Feminism Translatable? -Taiwan, Spivak, A-wu
RESPONDENT: Sandra Harding
Using Gayatri Spivak’s encounter with Taiwan feminists in 2002 as a starting point, this lecture will explore the by now seemingly clichéd question of the translatability of feminism across geocultural differences. Thinking anew about questions of (in)commensurability and relativism as activated by the location of a small island nation, Taiwan, and its own feminist faultline along indigeneity and settler colonialism, this lecture seeks to further the discussion of a feminist ethics of encounter across subnational and transnational spaces.
Sandra Harding is a Professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. She has contributed to standpoint theory and to the multicultural study of science. She is the author or editor of many books on these topics, and was one of the founders of the fields of feminist epistemology and philosophy of science. Her ways of developing standpoint theory and stronger standards for objectivity ("strong objectivity") have been influential in the social sciences as well as in philosophy, and have created discussions in the natural sciences. She served as Director of CSW from 1996 to 1999.
