Performer, composer, producer, innovator and human-rights activist, legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela returns to L.A. with his high-energy band of African musicians. Masekela explores his incredible musical history in a program that includes music from his acclaimed 2009 album Phola, new afro-pop, jazz works and ballads plus “Grazing in the Grass,” “Stimela” and “Bring Him Back Home,” his anthemic tribute to Nelson Mandela.
Articulate and brilliantly musical in a number of genres, Masekela has been a defining force in world music and the struggle for human rights both in Africa and around the world. “…a musician of phenomenal grace and power: intricate and fiery on flugelhorn and still blessed with a voice that can strip the leaves from the trees.” —The Independent (UK). This iconic artist is also known for his integral role in Paul Simon’s tour behind the acclaimed album Graceland.
February 2012 brings the release of Hugh’s Jabulani on the Listen 2 Africa Series Record Label. From the Zulu word meaning “rejoice,” Jabulani recalls several generations of music from wedding ceremonies in South Africa. In Hugh’s hometown, members of the wedding party would practice their choral parts every night, ‘marching up and down the street, singing the most beautiful songs, accompanied by very intricate choreographed moves, which were a pure joy to witness.” With Jabulani Hugh brings to life some of the most joyous and heady days of his youth.
