The Warriors of Qiugang tells a universal story of the people's struggle to bring about change against seemingly intractable forces. It records a Chinese community’s battle -- ultimately victorious -- against a local chemical plant that was poisoning the environment. Qiugang, a village of around two thousand residents in Anhui province, has become a symbol for people’s resilience and bravery in the peasants' fight for justice. The 39-minute film, released in January this year, documents the five-year campaign by villagers to convince the local government to shut down a local chemical plant that was polluting rivers and fields. Fish died, crops failed, and the villagers grew alarmed by the large numbers of their own succumbing to cancer.
The director, Ruby Yang, and writer, Thomas Lennon have previously produced a trilogy of short films set in China. The Blood of Yingzhou District, the first film of the trilogy, which chronicles the lives of AIDS orphans in China, won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
