Part of the Chinese Garden Lecture Series held by the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.

This talk will trace the development of Kun opera (kunqu昆曲) from the mid-sixteenth through the nineteenth century, with further comments about the state of the art form in contemporary times.  It will explore the differences between playwrights’ scripts and commercially performed versions of Kun opera; and it will describe the various settings in which opera was enjoyed—from the elegant gardens of wealthy Mandarins (not unlike the setting of the Liu Fang Yuan 流芳園) to temple courtyards and commercial playhouses.  Images and audio-visual materials will accompany the talk so as to provide a visceral appreciation of China’s classical opera.

Free and open to the public / No reservations required
