Jared Diamond, Professor of geography at UCLA, has authored books such as Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed and Guns, Germs and Steel. The latter book, which won him a Pulitzer Prize as well as the Aventis Prize for Science Books in the UK, deals with societal development through an examination of factors such as ecological conditions, availability of resources and the influence of technology, placing him among authors who have attempted to explain history from a materialist perspective.

He received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in addition to awards from the American Physiological Society, the National Geographic Society and the Zoological Society of San Diego. He has also been awarded a number of honorary degrees and received countless other recognitions, prizes and medals from institutions throughout the world. He was a founding board member of the Society of Conservation Biology and serves as US regional director of the World Wide Fund for Nature.
