Stere Gulea's "Morometii" (1988) is the cinematic adaptation of Marin Preda's novel of the same title. The film, based on the first part of the novel, follows the farmer Ilie Moromete and his large family, as the traditional Romanian peasant identity is lost to capitalism, industrialization and communism. This novel consecrated Marin Preda as one of the most important writers in post-WWII Romanian literature.
Following the screening, Dr. Gail Kligman, the director of CEES and a specialist in Romanian society, will discuss collectivization in Romania and answer questions from the audience.
