Rwanda, a small land-locked country in Central Africa, has made significant strides in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic since the war and genocide of 1994.  The Rwandan military’s HIV program, funded by the US Department of Defense and implemented in partnership with Charles Drew University, has been a shining example of the country’s success.  Dr. Murego and Mr. Zimulinda will describe the innovative model of mobile VCT and treatment that is being used to reach soldiers throughout the Rwandan countryside.

Speaker Bios:
Dr. Charles Murego was trained in surgery at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.  He was trained as a senior consultant in trauma and orthopedic surgery from Pavia University, Italy, and was trained as a specialist in neurovascular microsurgery and hand surgery from Montpellier University, France.  He holds a diploma in HIV/AIDS program development from South Africa and a certificate in HIV/AIDS management from the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA.  For the last 10 years, Dr. Murego has served as Director of Medical Services for the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF).  He oversees coordination of HIV/AIDS programs in the entire military, serves as medical advisor to the Ministry of Defense (MOD), and is a key policymaker within the RDF.  He also represents the MOD to other government ministries and to partnering organizations.  Dr. Murego is a member of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Eugene Zimulinda, MPH, has served as DOD PEPFAR Project Manager in Rwanda for the past three years.  In this position, he coordinates all partners funded by the DOD to implement HIV programs with the RDF.  He has extensive work experience in healthcare and public health.  Prior experiences include working as a physician’s assistant and running a maternal/child health clinic.
