Samira's Garden
Director: Latif Lahlou
(Morocco, 2007, 112 minutes)

Upon arriving from Casablanca to the country home of her new husband, alluring Samira is filled with optimism about her new role as a wife and a lover. Quickly realizing that her much older husband took her on as wife to care for his dying father and not to gain a companion, Samira begins to look for other options. When Samira, desperate for tenderness, learns her husband is impotent and unwilling to discuss it, she begins to pursue her shy new nephew Farouk who is living in the house with them. Set against the picturesque Moroccan countryside, this sensual film maintains its beauty and artistry while daring to deal with an important social taboo in Moroccan culture. As time goes by, she becomes interested in young Farouk, who is a little frightened by her advances but ends up entangled in a very passionate relationship.
