Darfur Refugees to Speak at UCLA

The Darfur Action Committee at UCLA presents Voices from Darfur! Two refugees from Darfur will tell their stories.

Thursday, May 08, 2008
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Grand Salon
Kerckhoff Hall
Los Angeles, CA 90095

It is easy to get lost in the numbers of the dead and displaced in Darfur.  It is easy to forget that the victims of the genocide are more than just statistics.  The hundreds of thousands of people that have died have all left behind mothers, fathers, sons and daughters to mourn their loss.

The event features speakers such as Abu Asal Abu Asal and Ibrahim Adam.  Abu Asal, a published Arabic-language novelist from Western Darfur now living in Massachusetts, was arrested and beaten by the Sudanese government for protesting the mistreatment of Darfuris, and was eventually forced to flee Sudan.  Adam, a native of Northern Darfur now living in Illinois, lost 20 family members when his village was burned by Janjaweed militia working with the Sudanese government, and is waiting for safe conditions to return and rebuild Darfur.

Ibrahim Adam and Abu Asal Abu Asal are only two of the speakers featured in the Voices from Darfur tour.  Other refugees also share their stories.
