Wednesday, May 21, 2008
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
3232 Campbell Hall
UCLA campus
Los Angeles, CA 90095

Old Routes, New Exchanges is a roundtable discussion on arts, international exchange, and community engagement featuring the organizer and participants of the Galleon Trade Arts Exchange (Manila, Philippines; Summer 2007) and a scholar of pre-1898 Filipinos in the Americas. Roundtable participants will speak about alternative practices in arts organizing and arts international exchange in Southeast Asia, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as about the historic Galleon Trade. This session seeks to open up a dialogue about the complex approaches required for the material and embodied aspects of “exchange” in different phases or forms of globalization.

Old Routes, New Exchanges brings together arts organizers, multi-media visual artists, and scholars, thereby providing multi-disciplinary perspectives on topics such as arts organizing in a transnational context; alternative models for international arts exchange; and space, development, and globalization. The roundtable participants’ diverse experience organizing in Filipino, Filipino-American, and Southeast Asian arts and culture will ground this particular conversation on “exchange in the era of globalization.”

Roundtable participants include:
Jenifer Wofford, Galleon Trade Arts Exchange organizer and multi-media artist
Dr. Eric Reyes, Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies, Cal State Fullerton
Reanne Estrada, Los Angeles-based multi-media artist
Eloisa Borah, UCLA historian/librarian
• event organizer Dr. Lucy Burns, Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies, UCLA
