Restoration of the Iraq Marshlands

This lecture will examine the events surrounding the drainage of the largest marshlands in Western Asia during the 1990s, which UNEP has called one of the three greatest environmental disasters of the 20th century, the impact on the local population, the so-called Marsh Arabs, and the program  designed to restore the marshlands.  The talk will focus on social continuity in the face of forced displacement, resettlement, dramatic shifts in the economy,  violence, etc. 

Peter Reiss has a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Rochester and is a staff member of Development Alternatives, Inc. a DC based economic development firm for nearly 27 years.  He is 2007 winner of the Lourdes Arizpe Award in Policy, Anthropology and Environmental Issues from the American Anthropological Association.
