This paper examines figurations of the historical and the human in the poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. It is concerned with the paradox of the use of the language of mystical Islam by Faiz to produce a secular understanding of human life. Faiz represents a revision of the forms of humanism associated with such earlier Urdu poets as Ghalib and Faiz.
