By the mid-first millennium BC, the Indian subcontinent was host to a dynamic political landscape of chiefdoms and states. Recent archaeological research at the region's presumed capital and at towns and cities in the regional hinterlands provides the opportunity to analyze the interconnected political, social, and economic activities that facilitated urban growth.
