Sociologist Éric Fassin argued that the egregious treatment of Roma people from Romania and Bulgaria in France has re-introduced the category of "race" into French politics. He accused local authorities of creating the very conditions that make Roma communities unlivable both for the Roma and inhabitants of surrounding areas.
