The UCLA International Institute is the central hub for global and area studies at UCLA. Founded in 1958, the Institute educates students, champions scholarship and builds academic partnerships here and abroad. Its more than 25 centers and programs promote innovative multidisciplinary research and educational opportunities in virtually every region of the world.

Part of a leading public university in the global city of Los Angeles, the UCLA International Institute also serves as a first‐class resource for the city and its residents. The breadth and depth of its research interests make the International Institute a valuable partner for its home city. The multiethnic population and economic interests of Los Angeles connect it closely to the countries of the Pacific Rim and Latin America, as well as those of the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Education

The UCLA International Institute offers a wide variety of rigorous academic degree programs in regional and global studies, including six undergraduate majors, eight undergraduate minors and four graduate programs.

Most courses and programs are interdisciplinary, focus on the modern world and encourage study abroad experience; together, these programs enroll nearly 1,000 students each year. The Institute also supports international and area studies across campus by funding faculty positions, advanced language classes and courses on world regions and global issues.

The internationally renowned faculty who participate in the International Institute’s degree programs hold appointments throughout the university’s departments and professional schools. They enrich the Institute’s global and regional course offerings by leading travel study and education abroad programs.

Graduates of UCLA International Institute programs — some of whom pursue advanced research and professional degrees — work in the education, government, nonprofit and business sectors of countries all over the world.

Research

The UCLA International Institute and its centers support cutting-edge research on both world regions and critical global issues through graduate student fellowships, language study scholarships and faculty grants. In addition, they provide funding for conferences, publications and collaborative research projects.

The International Institute is committed to sustaining the expertise that makes UCLA a leader in scholarship on global issues and regions, with each individual center creating a network of research scholars across the campus, the nation and the world.

A number of language education, student exchange and special international programs are also housed at the Institute in support of its international research and education mission.

Global Engagement

At the local level, the UCLA International Institute serves as the gateway to the world not just for UCLA, but also for Los Angeles.

The Institute’s diverse centers annually host some 500 free public events that showcase the most recent scholarship on country-specific, regional and global issues — encouraging everyone to become lifelong learners about the world. Popular cultural events and well-respected professional development workshops for K–12 educators round out local outreach activities.

At the campus level, the UCLA International Institute is uniquely positioned to bring together departments and centers engaged in international research throughout UCLA’s many divisions and professional schools. This gives the Institute a special convening role, enabling it to foster collaborative research and debate on pressing world challenges that require a global response, such as climate change, public health threats, international conflicts and migration.

At the international level, the International Institute develops and implements UCLA’s strategy of global engagement in education and research. Institute leaders manage UCLA’s international partnerships, which comprise more than 300 research, teaching and student exchange agreements with 200 institutions in 50 countries.

The International Institute also actively builds UCLA’s global presence by supporting overseas alumni networks; creating strategic international programs and partnerships; and cultivating UCLA’s relationships with educational institutions, governments, non-profit organizations and businesses worldwide. In addition, it represents UCLA in major global associations, such as the Association of International Education Administrators and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities.
